What is SharePoint?

What is Microsoft SharePoint?

SharePoint is Microsoft fastest selling server product ever..so What is Microsoft SharePoint? Here is Microsoft's definition:

"Microsoft SharePoint 2010 makes it easier for people to work together. Using SharePoint 2010, your people can set up Web sites to share information with others, manage documents from start to finish, and publish reports to help everyone make better decisions."

In a nutshell it is an application that is entirely web-based that makes building web sites and basic applications simple and easy for end users.  Obviously, like an Microsoft Server Technology, it can be extended through custom development to expand and build some key business applications.  So what can you use it for?  One example would be as a document management system.  You could use SharePoint OCR technology to make all the PDFs searchable.
